As last night’s gubernatorial debate was concluding one of the moderators decided to throw in one last question for the seven candidates — a controversial one that drew outrage from Republican gubernatorial candidate Carl Paladino’s campaign.
The question, “Do you support gay marriage?” was asked at 8:18 p.m. and due to time constraints the moderator stated that they wanted merely a “yes” or “no””answer, imposing a five second limit on answers from the candidates, as opposed to the 60 – 90 seconds they each got on every other question.
Paladino, who was up first on that question began to explain his views on the issue, only to be interrupted and have a one word answer demanded of him. The flustered candidate, who has been under fire from gay rights activists over remarks made last weekend, responded that he opposed same sex marriages. Five of the other candidates, including Democratic Attorney General Andrew M. Cuomo answered yes; Freedom Party candidate Charles Barron said that his Party was yet to take a position on the issue.
